This rare issue of the Dutch periodical, De Nieuwe Stem
(“The New Voice”), published just one year after the end of World War II,
constitutes the first public appearance of Anne Frank’s diary. Historian Jan
Romein, struck by the teenager’s eloquence and passion, arranged for the
printing of five excerpts. These fragments—addressed “to Kitty”—capture Anne’s
voice before the full diary’s publication and helped launch a global journey of
remembrance.
