Hitler Encircled

Political Cartoon by Winnie the Pooh Illustrator E.H. Shepard – “Germany Shall Never Be Encircled”

Date: Circa 1939

Location: United Kingdom

Medium: Original pencil drawing

Collection: Yavneh Klos Collection, WWII Archive

Best known for illustrating Winnie the Pooh, British artist E.H. Shepard depicts Hitler attempting to encircle the globe in this wartime cartoon. Titled “Germany Shall Never Be Encircled,” the drawing satirizes Nazi propaganda and was published in Punch magazine. Shepard was frustrated that he would be remembered for “that silly old bear,” rather than for works such as this biting political commentary on Hitler’s imperial ambitions.
