This souvenir facsimile of Germany’s unconditional
surrender, signed postwar by Admiral Karl Dönitz, “General Jodl in seinem
Auftrag Donitz, 7.4.78.” translated: “General Jodl by his Command, Donitz,
7.4.78.” As Adolf Hitler’s appointed successor, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz
oversaw the final days of the Third Reich. Acting in this role, he authorized
General Alfred Jodl to sign the instrument of unconditional surrender on
Germany’s behalf as noted in the DS. This document marks the formal conclusion
of Nazi military resistance and the onset of Germany’s confrontation with the
consequences of its wartime atrocities.
