TLS Hans Lammers to Josef Bürckel
On Confiscated Austrian Art
Date: May 4, 1939
Location: Berlin, Germany
Medium: Typed letter signed (TLS)
Collection: Yavneh Klos Collection, Nazi Perpetrators Archive
Chief of the Reich Chancellery Hans Lammers informs Josef
Bürckel that Adolf Hitler has reserved final authority over confiscated
Austrian artworks. The letter directs cooperation with Nazi art dealer Karl
Haberstock, who was inspecting looted collections for Hitler’s planned Führer
Museum. This correspondence illustrates the regime’s systematic cultural
plunder and the central role of high-ranking officials in Nazi art theft. It is
estimated that over 100,000 of the 600,000 works of art seized by the Nazis
have never been restored to their rightful, primarily Jewish, owners.
